Flowering: Arching pendulous spike with many large scales enclosing the flowers.
Hardiness: hardiness rating 3. Musa basjoo is one of the few banana trees sufficiently hardy to grow outdoors in our climate. In comparison to other banana trees, Musa basjoo has relatively narrow leaves. The slender dark purpulish trunk of the Musa basjoo is often covered by dead leave bases. Musa basjoo can produce arching pendulous spikes with many large scales enclosing the flowers, followed by its fruits (bananas).
